The Region of Durham exists on lands that the Michi Saagiig Anishinaabeg inhabited for thousands of years prior to European colonization. These lands are the traditional and treaty territories of the Nations covered under the Williams Treaties, including the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, Alderville First Nation, Hiawatha First Nation, Curve Lake First Nation, and the Chippewa Nations of Georgina Island, Beausoleil and Rama. We honour, recognize, and respect Indigenous Peoples as rights holders and stewards of the lands and waters on which we have the privilege to live. In our efforts towards reconciliation, we continue to build and strengthen relationships with First Nations, as well as the large M&eacute;tis communities and growing Inuit communities here in Durham. We commit to learning from Indigenous values and knowledge, building opportunities for collaboration, and recognizing that we are all connected.

The history of Durham RegionIn the late 1960s, the Province of Ontario noticed a large population growth attributed to the post-World War II baby boom, leading to increased density in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).And, as the GTHA po<a href="https://www.durham.ca/en/regional-services.aspx" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><img src="https://s3.ca-central-1.amazonaws.com/ehq-production-canada/b6aa249fc78e77c00f758deb6d62299df50d992f/original/1703793197/57a69ecba1cc60bc22ee5d8e0a7ec57a_landing-map.jpg?1703793197">click on the photo above to explore an interactive map of Durham Region </a>pulation grew, so did the need for expanded water and sewer facilities, roads and public transportation systems. It was determined that a regional level of municipal government should be formed to provide and streamline additional services.Durham Region was created on Jan. 1, 1974, under The Regional Municipality of Durham Act, 1973. The new bill introduced a regional level of municipal government, which would include eight area municipalities, now known as: the cities of Oshawa and Pickering, the towns of Ajax and Whitby, the Municipality of Clarington, and the townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge.<div class="fr-img-space-wrap">Durham Region became the largest geographical jurisdiction in the GTHA, with an area of just over 2,500 square kilometres. Durham Region stretches from Pickering in the west, Newtonville in the east, Lake Ontario in the south and Lake Simcoe in the north.</div> Ontario Courthouse and Administration Building<img src="https://s3.ca-central-1.amazonaws.com/ehq-production-canada/7c9f2b50db222ce7ecb9074212e9111ad4482cca/original/1703794071/7d86f0620ead8e52707974bb92c19674_Council_Chambers_side.jpg?1703794071" style="width: 300px;" class="fr-fic fr-dii fr-fil">The County of Ontario Court House and Administration Building, which first opened in 1964, housed administrative offices for the County of Ontario. This included: council chambers, the warden&rsquo;s office, the clerk-treasurer, an engineer, the health unit, and juvenile and family court rooms.When the Region was formed in January 1974, the building became a headquarters for this new upper-tier municipality. This new facility was built on a piece of property, located directly beside the Region&rsquo;s former headquarters (also the previous County of Ontario Court House and Administration Building). Five years later, the original building was torn down. Prior to the start of this demolition in summer 2010, various plaques, the coat of arms and other landmarks of historical significance (to Durham Region and the former County of Ontario) were removed from in, and around, the building.<div class="fr-img-space-wrap"><style>  </style> </div><style>  </style><style>  </style>Providing key programs and services<div class="fr-img-space-wrap">Today, the Region provides a large number of programs and services. Durham Region Celebrates 50 Years

Work is underway to develop Durham Region&rsquo;s 2025 Durham Region Strategic Plan, which will guide the direction of our work over the next few years. It will outline how we will continue to deliver award-winning programs and services and act as a compass to advance our work to achieve the futures we want to create.From March 1 to March 31, we invite you to have your say on the future of Durham Region by completing a survey or submitting an entry to our art contest. You can also enter to win one of 20 $100 gift cards.

Durham Region's 2025 Strategic Plan

<h2>Program overview</h2>The Durham Greener Homes program helps Durham residents make their homes more energy efficient while saving money. Since the program launched in April 2022, more than 1,600 residents have signed up to take advantage of services including personalized advice from expert energy coaches, financial incentives, and tools to lower energy consumption, make their homes more comfortable, reduce utility bills, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The program is delivered by Windfall Ecology Centre. This can include things like reducing the impact of basement flooding, wind damage, and heat stress.
