Hidden Talents

In September of 2020 I left the corporate world and took a position of Resident Care Aide (RCA) at Fairview Lodge. Although the work was very different, working with the elderly had long been a passion of mine and I soon fell in love with the job and each of the residents. The reward of enlightening someone’s day through simple conversation, activities and day-to-day assistance was something I had never experienced in the corporate world. While many of the relationships and experiences will stay with me forever, one memory in particular warms my heart to this very day.
While interacting with the residents, through activities, games, or casual conversation you get to know them on a personal level and really understand who they are, and the life that they have lived. While interacting with this one resident I was pleasantly surprised when she shared her love for music. This love of music peaked my curiosity, so I had her elaborate a little more. While she was modest when talking of her musical talent on the piano, it didn’t take me long to figure out that she had a special gift. Her eyes lit up as she described her love of the piano and the many hours she spent playing.
One quiet morning I asked her if she would be interested in playing the piano. My intent was never to showcase her talent but to give her a chance to play and find some enjoyment in a pastime that was very much part of her life. I was pleasantly surprised when she willingly agreed and showed a real interest in playing the piano. Keeping in mind that it may have been a while since she played, I arranged to have the piano setup to suite her needs, and in a quiet place for her to play. Little did we know that we were about to receive a piano performance that day, one that would resonate with everyone on the floor. As soon as her fingers touched the keyboard years of playing soon became evident and her “hidden talent” began to shine through. Everyone was shocked at how beautiful she played, and other residents began to congregate and join in by singing along. It was truly a beautiful moment, one that I will never forget. I was so proud of everyone that day as we enjoyed each others company and spent the morning singing together.
