Durham Region Bicycle Parking Guidelines

About the Bicycle Parking Guidelines Project

The Region of Durham has launched a new project to develop bicycle parking guidelines an important step toward making cycling more convenient and accessible. The Bicycle Parking Guidelines Project will inform the design, location and management of bicycle parking with the goal of encouraging more people to cycle within Durham Region.

The development of bicycle parking guidelines was recommended as part of the 2021 Durham Regional Cycling Plan, which sets out a vision for a more connected and bike-friendly region. The Region recognizes the importance of well-designed and well-placed bicycle parking. By increasing the availability and quality of bike parking facilities, we can make cycling a more convenient, practical and attractive option for people of all ages and abilities. These guidelines aim to create a more consistent approach to bicycle parking that meets the short- and long-term parking needs of everyone wanting to cycle in Durham Region.

The Bicycle Parking Guidelines Project will focus on bicycle parking at public sites across the region, including along the Primary Cycling Network (PCN), along other local and Regional roads, and at major destinations such as community and recreation centres, libraries, transit stations/stops, parks, post-secondary institutions and other attractions. The guidelines will also serve as a resource for developers to support bicycle parking at private commercial and residential sites.

A Public Information Centre (PIC) was held on September 25 as part of Phase 2 of the Bicycle Parking Guidelines project. In this session, the project team provided an overview of the project and requested feedback on preferences for bicycle parking types, features and preliminary recommendations. If you missed the session, you can view the PIC materials here and submit any comments via email to Danielle.Culp@durham.ca. Comments are requested by October 17, 2025.
