Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategy Consultation - Fall 2024

Over the last several years, Durham Region has made great strides in advancing its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) goals in our community. Following the creation of a dedicated division, which falls under the Chief Administrative Officer’s office, the Region has planned and executed several public events that are reflective of and celebrate the diverse and growing community within the region.

In early 2023, the Region hired a third-party consultant to conduct an Equity Audit. This audit included a procedural review, a job competition review, an online survey, one-on-one interviews and focus groups. Based on the information gathered during this process and the subsequent analysis, the consultant prepared a series of recommendations, one of which was the creation of a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategy. As demonstrated through the 2023 Equity Audit and other related initiatives, the Region of Durham is committed to advancing DEI through the development of a comprehensive strategy that reflects the diverse voices of our communities.

The development of the DEI Strategy builds on previous efforts and aligns with our ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive community. Collaboration and community engagement is important in the development of this strategy, which is why the Region is undertaking this work with the assistance of a consultant who is guided by an internal working group.

A thorough review of best and emerging practices is being conducted as part of this process to ensure our approach is evidence-based, and effective. This important work is a multi-step process that will involve staff and the community. Stay tuned for more information as we continue this work and prepare for public engagement opportunities.

  • Durham Region is working hard to make our community a place where everyone feels welcomed, respected, and included. Over the past few years, we have taken several important steps, such as launching the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan, setting up the Durham Region Anti-Racism Task Force, developing the Durham Local Immigration Partnership, conducting a Community Needs Assessment and progressively updating our Multi-Year Accessibility Plan. These actions, among many others, have helped us learn more about what our community needs to be more inclusive.

We are now developing a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Strategy that builds on insights from our past initiatives, assessments, policy reviews, and community consultations. This survey is only one part of our ongoing efforts to gather input. We invite you to share your feedback, which will help guide our priorities and actions. All responses are anonymous, which means no one will know who shared specific answers.

Thank you for taking the time to share your ideas and for helping us make Durham Region a more welcoming place for everyone.
