Canada’s National Day of Mourning

28 April 2026

On any given working day, three families learn a loved one will not be coming home. Thousands more experience life‑altering workplace injuries or illnesses. These tragedies affect loved ones, coworkers and communities.

Today (April 28), on the National Day of Mourning, we honour those who have lost their lives and stand with the workers and families whose lives have been forever changed.

In Durham Region, we are committed to the safety and security of all workers, ensuring no one feels unsafe at work or experiences lasting harm from preventable incidents.

To remember those tragically lost and advocate for safer workplaces, flags at all Regional facilities have been lowered to half-mast today, from sunrise to sunset.
