Haitian Flag Day

15 May 2026

May 18 is Haitian Flag Day, which marks an important moment in Haiti’s history when the flag was first raised in 1803 to commemorate the country’s independence from the French.

This day recognizes Haiti’s journey to becoming the first independent republic in the Caribbean and honours the strength, pride and cultural identity of the Haitian people.

The flag itself represents unity and hope, reflecting the resilience of those who fought for freedom and the lasting spirit of the Haitian community.

At the request of members of the local Haitian community, and as a symbol of respect and inclusion, the Haitian Flag will fly at Regional Headquarters from today (May 15) until May 19, recognizing the many contributions of the Haitian community in Durham Region and around the world.

Community members or organizations wishing to request a proclamation are encouraged to do so through the Region’s proclamation request form.
